The Walking Dead by Image Comics
One of the best comics to come out in years... definately the best Horror comic I have ever read. Click on the Image Logo and go to Online comics to check out the first Issue. Its worth your time. In case your interested here is a quick catch you up (which was ripped off and updated) What is The Walking Dead? The Walking Dead is a black-and-white ongoing series by writer Robert Kirkman. The first six issues feature art by Tony Moore, with Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn taking over the art chores from issue 7 on. Published monthly by Image Comics, the entire series to date (all 18 issues) has been collected in three separate trade paperbacks. Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye collects issues 1-6, Vol. 2: Miles Behind Us collects issues 7-12 and Vol. 3: Safety Behind Bars collects issues 13-18. The story follows a small group of average Janes and Joes as they attempt to survive a zombie infestation. Though The Walking Dead features thousands of zombies chopping on flesh, this is not a horror story. The zombie dilemma (the origins of which remain a mystery) is merely a means to examine our relationships. Zombies appear in pretty much every issue, but what makes The Walking Dead great is that the zombies are never the story. This is a human drama showcasing the best and the worst of society. Stripped of every luxury of the 21st century, with no law and no government, how does mankind survive? How did this happen? No one knows. There's no more TV, no newspapers and no radio reports. It could be a virus, an experiment gone wrong, or a biblical apocalypse. It's very likely we won't know the cause or cure (if there is one) for quite some time. Where's the military? While searching through Atlanta, Walking Dead's prime hero, Rick, stumbles upon an abandoned tank. There are several zombies in military gear, which leads us to believe that the military was overtaken by the zombies throughout the South at least. There have been no signs of police or the army. There are already far more zombies than humans. Zombie 101 Zombies in The Walking Dead are slow-moving almost brain-dead eating machines. They cannot speak intelligibly and appear to have one desire -- to feed. You won't see zombies firing guns, wielding chainsaws or driving cars. These guys are as dumb as they are dead, but there are millions of them across the country. Though it's originally believed that a person must be bitten and killed by a zombie before they turn, it's later discovered that all dead (no matter the cause of death) will rise from the grave. The Story So Far (Contains Spoilers) ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Did I mention there were spoilers below? ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! I'm not kidding... turn back unless you want to know whats going on! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Last Chance.... The next thing you will read is the spoiler! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Days Gone Bye It begins with Rick, a dedicated cop, waking from a coma in a hospital. There are no orderlies, no nurses, no doctors and no loved ones to be found. Though he was comatose from a shotgun blast to the chest, Rick is able to walk. He probably wishes he hadn't, as he finds the hospital filled with the dead -- and some of those dead are still walking around. There are no answers as to how or why the outbreak began, but the dead are walking among us and they're real hungry. Rick escapes Kentucky and heads towards Atlanta, hoping that his wife and son managed to escape to a larger city. What he discovers is that the cities are overrun with zombies, that just about everyone who decided to take refuge in the big metropolises of the US ended up as zombie fodder. As fortune would have it, Rick's wife, Lori, and his son Carl are in a camp just outside of town. They were brought there by Rick's old mate, Shane. Little does Rick know that in the past few weeks since the zombie menace began, Shane and Lori had a night of passion, one that may or may not be responsible for Lori's recent pregnancy. To top it off, Shane's a bit obsessed with Lori and here comes Rick, a natural leader who's taken Shane's position of power in the newly formed tribe and has stolen away Shane's new love. Over the next few weeks, Rick begins a self-defense course, teaching everyone how to utilize weapons, how to be prepared for a zombie attack. He discovers that the zombies can be fooled by smell, if you're willing to drench yourself in zombie stench. The trick is never used again, for some reason, but due to the slow nature of zombies, it's generally unnecessary. As tensions mount in the camp, hope for salvation is almost unspoken. There is no search for a cure, no thought that one of these people is the key to undoing these horrors. These are regular people trapped in an unthinkable situation. Just as the campers begin to feel a little comfortable in their surroundings, a zombie attack cuts their number by two. Shortly afterwards, things with Shane boil over. The Walking Dead teaches that the zombies are not the most frightening thing in the world. Shane, overcome with jealousy, attempts to murder Rick. He's killed by Rick's little boy who shoots Shane through the neck. This is not the last time that humans will turn on one another. Miles Behind Us Camp is finally moved, with everyone packing into an RV in hopes of finding more permanent dwelling. The dark events with Shane hang over everyone. As new members join, others meet their end at the hand of the zombies. Almost every zombie-related fatality comes from overconfidence, cockiness and brash behavior. As one zombie incident is dealt with a new human dilemma emerges. While exploring a forest, Carl is accidentally shot and nearly killed. Though he's taken to a nearby farm and saved, the group is slowly falling apart. The farm is run by Hershel, a spiritual man who believes it may be possible to save the dead. In fact, he's been keeping the walking dead locked up in his barn. That, of course, turns out badly. Before long, Hershel loses his children, first to zombies and then later to something far worse. Unable to overcome the guilt he feels for the loss of his son and daughter, Hershel forces Rick and his troop to leave the farm. They aren't on the road long before they discover their next home, the perfect place to settle down -- the State Penitentiary. Safety Behind Bars The group, which is ever dwindling thanks to several zombie attacks, secures the prison. On their search, Rick and his confidant Tyreese make a startling discovery -- four prisoners are still alive and well in the cafeteria. Though one of the prisoners, Dexter, is a convicted murderer, the group sees no other option than to integrate the quartet into the general population. With the prison secure, the only true nightmare are those trapped within its gates. Among the shocking developments, is a suicide pact between Tyreese's daughter and her boyfriend. The boyfriend manages to kill her, but fails to die himself. Tyreese takes care of that, but his murder is absolved by Rick. It's these two deaths that offer a startling discovery. Both bodies rise to become zombies, despite not having been bitten by the undead. Realizing this means Shane has not truly passed, Rick leaves camp on a motorcycle to finish business. While Rick's away, all hell breaks loose. Tyreese appears to be lost to a sea of zombie while trying to clear out the gym. He's locked inside, assumed to have been devoured. At the same time, Hershel, who has brought his family into the prison for safety, discovers his two youngest daughters beheaded. Dexter is immediately implicated and locked up -- an action he does not take kindly. Rick returns from having finished off the undead Shane and reports that with springtime arriving, the zombies are venture out in full force. The prison is perhaps the only safe haven in all of Georgia. Upon hearing that Tyreese was left for dead, Rick head to the gym and finds that his friend managed to survive and has been waiting patiently for someone to let him out. Rick isn't back long before the true knife-wielding murderer of Hershel's girls is discovered. It's one of the other convicts and he's beaten, killed and thrown to the zombies gathered at the prison gates. Things have no chance to settle as the newly released Dexter manages to acquire a shotgun. He puts it to Rick's head and orders everyone out of the prison. That's where things end in issue 18. Things couldn't get any worse, but they will...

I agree with this assesment. This is a great comic. But sooooo depressing. I thought they could have a bit of happiness once they found the prison, but no. The characters are so intriguing. The writer has done a fantastic job with that, focusing on the here and now, yet still having this backdrop of horror ready to swoop in at any minute, or perhaps lurking around the corner...

Kampfgruppe Cottrell- 12-10-2007

Best zombie comics and I may even say zombie storyline ever! Best scene was at the beginning when they go to that gated community to rest and as the sun rises it melts the snow off the sign that reads "ALL DEAD INSIDE!" Damn that's great! Brian

Dave R- 12-10-2007

Currently reading this myself. I'm on book 3.

Lowtardog- 12-11-2007

You know I have never read any of these comics. I have read the Reign of the dead trilogy who I think wrote the comics and they are very good

Kampfgruppe Cottrell- 12-11-2007

Buy the trades, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Brian
