Route 66 AAR run at HAVOC 23 Its dawn in New Mexico, and your driving down Route 66 towards some nowhere town. It’s about 4 months after ‘Z’ day, and Zeds are becoming old hat. You know the drill, your gang, is reliable and pretty well armed.
But you’re tired of always being on edge, you have heard rumors that a Government aide, was traveling through this area, with the keys to one of them “Safe, Secure, and Undisclosed” locations, you heard about on the news…
Well on ‘Z’ day he went in to this town, “Twin Buttes” and never came out. If you could find the keys, you could get to that location, and kick back for a while. Think of it, power, AC, booze, hell even Nintendo. The problem is you’re not too sure where the “Location” is, and other people have heard the same rumors.
Driving east, the Buttes of “Twin Buttes” rise up before you and soon you see the signs welcoming you to the town. It’s not a very pleasant welcome, as a few Zeds can be seen staggering about the town.
The nice thing about that new F-150 Jimmy Joe picked up, is it gives a nice smooth firing platform to pick off the stray Zeds, just like a good deer stand. A couple of quick bursts with the old assault rifle and your good as gold.
You stop the truck, and Jimmy Joe, Arlene and Cletus jump out and move left searching the cars and popping Zeds. You, Joe Bob, and Charlene, break right to search the first double wide on the west side of town.
Yep, infested with Zeds, Joe Bob, pops them with the shotgun, all done, but you’re stirring them up. Got to keep moving, some are flowing in behind you. No sign of the briefcase, keep moving.
With Joe Bob and Charlene in the trailer, you back up and keep the door clear for them popping Zeds as the stagger down Route 66 towards town, when you hear another vehicle coming in from the south.
“Sheeit, Jimmy Joe, we got company!” he waves back. Moving his team into the Junk Shop and off the street.
As Joe Bob and Charlene leave the trailer, shaking their heads that they didn’t find the briefcase, you spin around look east, in time to see red mini-van and some tie wearing morons, jump out with a train of Zeds behind them. One a woman wearing thick glasses, spots you, nods and fires off a couple of quick shots into a Zed dropping him.
Ok, you think, they got bigger fish to fry right now, but they are moving towards the gas station. Damn, you wanted to check the building, but there is a car between you and the gas station, you figure a quick check of that will cause no harm.
As you move towards the car, a Zed comes staggering out from behind the gas pumps, towards the you. Another quick burst, lights him up, and he drops, the woman is moving towards the door of the gas station, doesn’t see a few more zombies, awaking to the sound of the AR-15. Charlene and Joe Bob, are crossing behind you to check out the wrecked Mack Truck in the middle of town.
Scanning left you see Jimmy Joe, and Cletus getting involved in looking at all the junk, and not searching properly. “Get off you lazy ass, Jimmy Joe, you got company", as a string of Zeds, shuffle towards the Junk Shop.
A quick search of the car, finds nothing, as you pull your head out, in time to see a Zed closing on the woman with the glasses, it reaches out and touches her, she screams and runs into the gas station, followed by the zombie, another scream and silence.
You look back towards the gas station to see if any of he buddies are going to help her, and you see one of the tie wearing morons, and his flunky, searching one of them foreign jobs, as he starts to stand up, a burst of submachine gun fire erupts from the building across the street. The flunky goes down and he ducks behind the car.
That ain’t good; you make a break for the Mack truck that Charlene is searching, when you hear a scream from the Junk Shop.
“Damnit, look out for the Zeds!” you shout, but its too late, Jimmy Joe and Cletus, where slacking off, when a Zed made a run at Arlene.
She runs, back into the shop followed by a Zed. Jimmy Joe and Cletus are no where to be seen.
The firefight is roaring behind you, you hear burst of fire going back and forth from the buildings across from the gas station. Not your problem.
Crossing the street you are joined by the other weirdo in a tie, and he got something that looks like a canoe paddle, but its all blade, and almost no handle. Though it’s got to be good for whacking a Zed. He also has a double barreled shotgun, and is running for the Mack. You get into cover by going behind the tipped over trailer, when you hear another burst of fire from behind the truck, the guy with the weird canoe paddle takes a dive and rolls under the tires of the truck. He ain't looking at you, so you move on.
You see Cletus, and Charlene moving north, up the side road towards some trailers when you catch up to Jimmy Joe.
“Where’s Arlene?” you ask.
“She didn’t make it”, he says flatly.
Right, no time to jaw jack, there more than Zeds in this town and you can't mourn your losses right now. You, Jimmy Joe and Joe Bob move into one of they fancy tourist places called “Dino Golf”; it got one of those tiny golf courses, and is filled with concrete dinosaurs. Pushing through the front doors, of the wall slightly crushed in by the wrecked Mack truck, you hug the wall.
The street side is loaded with big plate glass windows and there is all sorts of shooting going on in the street. You want no part of that.
As you start to scan your surrounding, you are pleased there are no Zeds in here, that would make things complicated. As Jimmy Joe gets ready to search the place, a couple of bald heads appear at the service window at the other end of the building, followed by a shotgun barrel. Boom! Joe Bob, is knocked down by the blast, but isn’t badly hurt. Jimmy Joe lights off with his AK and smokes one of the guys in the window, the other disappears.
Suddenly with your ears ringing from the gunfire you hear from the street; “There it is!”
Followed by prolonged thumping sounds, and the patter of feet. You lean your head round the corner of the picture window, to see three people with a briefcase, clustered at the front of the wrecked truck. One of them spots you, and starts to raise his machine pistol towards you. As he does, there is a deafening roar, and the crowd drops to the ground, one guy nearly blown in half, the rest wounded. You see the weirdo with the canoe paddle, both of the barrels of his shotgun smoking, roll back under the truck.
The briefcase lays on the ground between the bodies, the severed arm still chain to it.
Then you see the baldy, with the shotgun make a run for it. But he slips on the blood of his fallen buddy and stumbles just short of the briefcase. Even staggering, he managed to snap off a shot at the guy under the truck who is desperately, trying to reload, turning him into a red smear.
As the guy stumbles forward, you and Jimmy Joe pop up in the window, the now badly bleeding, guy on the ground who had tried to shoot you, struggles to shoot you again, he fires off a burst, but his aim is poor, being all shot up like that. Jimmy Joe sprays the prone figures around the briefcase and slaughters them.
You put a burst into the back of the guy reaching for the briefcase, and he crumples to the ground. From your cover in the Dino Golf you see the other guys, climbing into their minivan and backing out of town, leaving at least 3 dead; as you see zombies wrestle one of them to the ground biting him…
Running out you grab the briefcase and find a map with the location of the place on the body of one of the fallen guys. With a quick whistle, you signal for Charlene and Cletus to join you. Arlene, or what was Arlene staggers out of the Junk Shop, a quick burst puts her down.
As you drive towards the “Location” you wonder if they have PBR in the fridge…
This is an account of the game run at HAVOC 23 using "All Things Zombie" by Two Hour Wargames. It is told from the perspective of the “Rednecks” one of the 3 teams of 2 players, that where searching for the briefcase.
The teams, Rednecks, Shirts, and Shirts where basically balanced in force, and each entered on a different side of the table.
The objective was to find the briefcase, and loot one body from each team. If it got too hairy, there where alternate victory conditions.
Notable Events:
The Shirts had crap luck with activation all game; they rolled a number of 6s. At one point they saw the Rednecks, and chose to ignore them. Then they rolled a high activation number (4), and the isolated figure (Rep 3) could not act, the Zeds closed on her, charged from rear, she failed morale and ran into a building with 2 more Zeds. End of story.
The Shirts team leaders where made up of a Hasselfree Ray HFA007 AKA “Shaun” from “Shaun of the Dead”, and a RAFM USX Harold Smith, White collar Survivalist AKA “William D-Fens Foster” from Falling Down.
The Shaun’s last act of defiance was great; I thought the Skins had the game in the bag. The Skin’s team leader, the one that shot from the window is a RAFM UXS Hammer, Biker AKA “Denton Van Zan” from Reign of Fire. He tried to move fast, to get the briefcase, with a Rep of 5 and failed on both rolls! We figured he slipped on the blood.

G.Y. That was great!!!!!
Loved the PBR refrence, part's were a little graphic...... and that's what really count's in a zombie game. The whole board looked great, but i must say Dino golf stood out for me.
Good Job!
